THE UI OF THE X FAMILY - nokia

Doug Walston from Nokia Design oversaw the creation of the stunning new user interface on the Nokia X family. We caught up with him to learn more about the challenges, and the achievement.

“With the X family,” says Doug, “we were really focused on the needs of new people using smartphones, especially those in emerging markets. We wanted to create a beautifully simple device that gives access to a wealth of apps.”

Beautiful simplicity

“The device has a simple, geometric design language brought from both Lumia and the Asha 500 family.

“We use bold colours, but once you’re working with the phone, our aim is to highlight the content, not the controls. So we don’t use brightly coloured buttons inside apps, for example. We want to let the content speak for itself.”

ui_one

Crossing the gap

“The X family is crossing a bridge between Asha and Lumia smartphones, so it naturally contains influences from both sides.”

“From the Lumia side, you can see we’ve been influenced by Live Tiles. We’ve also been able to bring in signature Nokia experiences from Nokia MixRadio and HERE Maps. It’s really very unusual to find such powerful, free apps and experiences at this price.”

But the Asha family is perhaps where people will be graduating from to buy phones in the new X family. Doug was keen to bring in the best from both worlds.

ui_three“The ability to swipe straight into the Fastlane notifications screen has been enormously popular on Asha. Moving it to the X family allowed us to take another look at it and even improve on the experience.

“It’s now more robust: it tracks all your experiences, and the things you need to pay attention to. And we’ve made it more intelligent, so it brings more notifications from the apps and people that are most important to you, and fewer from those apps that you don’t use or from those people you don’t contact often.”

Easy access

And the new Fastlane doesn’t require any extra effort from developers.

“Apps don’t need to be rewritten to tap into Fastlane. We’ve used some special sauce (and native platform hooks) so it all just works. You can also exclude apps or individual items. If there’s a game you play, for example, that constantly begs you to upgrade levels, you can just tell it to stop and you won’t see those notices again.”

Notification icons also appear on the phone’s glance screen. Fuller descriptions of the notifications appear on the lock screen. So your privacy is preserved from people who can see your screen, but getting up-to-date is never more than a tap away. The phone also supports Android widgets, so you can have those on your home screen if you like.

Point of pride

“If there’s an element of the interface of which I’m particularly proud,” concludes Doug, “it’s the home screen.

“It’s so distinctive, bold and direct. It’s a break from the confusion that you see elsewhere in phones at this price.

“The simplicity of the interface also means that it has a very low overhead on performance. Typically for a phone with all these features, you would expect a horrid battery life and a laggy interface in this segment, but that isn’t true of the X family at all. The performance is surprisingly good.”

Five Alternatives to WhatsApp

Those Who Hate Whatsapp That It’s Owned by Facebook Now, you should look for alternative apps.

Many people worry, all the data will be store by facebook, include our contact data, So enjoy

1. GroupMe

image

This app is great for keeping in touch with your many social circles. It’s like a private mobile chatroom that works on a wide range of devices, free of charge. It even allows those with SMS to join the conversation. So if someone in the group doesn’t have a 3G connection, she can still receive group messages for a small fee. It has a very extensive catalog of emoji and a tool that allows you to charge your friends money for something (if, say, they bought you a drink at a concert). It’s particularly helpful if you find yourself at a mixer or a convention and want to share the experience with other people there — or, you know, just gossip about other people with your close inner circle. Mostly, my friends and I just use it to send each other emoji stories.

Available for iOSAndroid, and Windows Phone. Free.

2. Kik

image

Kik also allows you to cultivate your own mobile friend group chats, for free, on pretty much every device out there. What sets it apart, however, is an interface that allows you to easily browse the web and share links, photos, videos and games with your friends. It also has its own robust app store, for sharing applications within Kik itself.

Available on iOSAndroidWindows PhoneBlackBerry and Nokia. Free.

3. Viber

image

Viber’s claim to fame is the ability to text, share multimedia and callwhomever you want for free. It’s also built up a pretty comprehensive desktop app (to allow for easier video calls). Not to mention, its layout and in-app stickers are cutesy and fun, if you’re into that sort of thing. In essence it’s a good way to save money on a data plan for anyone in a long-distance relationship.

Available oniOSAndroidWindows PhoneBlackBerryNokia andBada. Free.

4. Skype

image

You probably know about the Microsoft-owned Skype, which is a desktop and mobile service that allows you to video chat and message people for free. It allows you to call people for free in your home country, and for as low as 1 cent a minute internationally, depending on the region. You may not have noticed this, but it also recently merged its contact address book with old MSN and Hotmail accounts, so you can now reach out to long-lost friends. Unlike WhatsApp, it gives you a little more control over who can contact you, asking you to approve anyone who’s reaching out before a call or message comes through.

Available on iOSAndroidWindows Phone and BlackBerry. Free.

5. Kakao

image

Kakao, though very similar to the others on this list, is probably the most playful of the bunch. The Korean-based messaging app allows you to chat, call and share photos with your friends for free, worldwide. Its unique features include the ability to send voice notes, share your location and listen to music in a group chatroom. Kakao also provides ridiculously adorable animated “stickers” and themes that you can purchase to make your conversation more personalized. Yet another clever feature that other messaging apps don’t provide: the ability to poll everyone in a group chat on an issue in order to come to a decision quickly. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wasted 30 minutes going back and forth with my friend circle about which day they’re free and when they can have dinner.

Available on iOSAndroidWindows Phone and BlackBerry. Free.

There you have it. Now you have an escape plan in case Facebook ruins a good thing.

Mozilla will introduce '$25 smartphone'

firefox-adaptive-phone Screen Shot 2014-02-24 at 11.56.27 AM

Mozilla has shown off a prototype for a $25 (£15) smartphone that is aimed at the developing world.

The company, which is famed mostly for its Firefox browser, has partnered with Chinese low-cost chip maker Spreadtrum.

While not as powerful as more expensive models, the device will run apps and make use of mobile internet.

It would appeal to the sorts of people who currently buy cheap “feature” phones, analysts said.

Feature phones are highly popular in the developing world as a halfway point between “dumb” phones – just voice calls and other basic functions – and fully-fledged smartphones.

“You’re not really talking about smartphone experience” Carolina MilanesiAnalyst

Mozilla hopes that it will capture an early lead in a market that is now being targeted by mobile device manufacturers who see the developing world as the remaining area for massive growth.

It will face stern competition from bigger, more established brands, however – with more announcements of this kind expected over the course of the next couple of days at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

“These solutions expand the global accessibility of open web smartphones to first-time and entry-level smartphone buyers by reducing the time and cost required for handset makers to bring these devices to market,” said Spreadtrum in a press statement.

Mozilla said the phone “redefines” the entry-level phone market.

mozilla samartphone

The concept of a cheap smartphone may seem likely to appeal to consumers in developed countries, particularly those who locked into long contracts in order to subsidise the cost of the likes of the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy range.

But analyst Carolina Milanesi, from Kantar Worldpanel, said it should not be seen as a competitor.

Mozilla also announced new high-end smartphones

“You’re not really talking about smartphone experience.

“You’re talking about a clumsy smartphone that’s a little bit better than a feature phone – still primarily for voice and text.”

The phone runs Mozilla’s own mobile operating system – something that could cause problems as competition in the cheap smartphone market steps up, Ms Milanesi added.

In addition to the $25 smartphone, Mozilla also launched several high-end models, including devices from Huawei and ZTE.

Five Alternatives if You Hate Google Map

Sources : www.yahoo.com/tech

“Eww! What in the world is this?!”

If that was your reaction after laying eyes on the new desktop version of Google Maps announced Wednesday, then you should be happy to learn that there are several online alternatives that work great.

So, if you’re really interested in moving on from Google Maps, pack your travel bag and allow us to be your guide to finding a map service more your style. (We’re not going to include Yahoo Maps, which, like us, is made by Yahoo, but that’s good, too.)

Here are our picks. Don’t forget to use the restroom before we leave.

Bing Maps

5 alternative map

Microsoft’s foray into mapping is probably the most like Google Maps, so it’s certainly worth trying if you’re looking for a replacement. The site uses Bing to search for nearby food, coffee, retail and other services. (During our tinkering with Bing Maps, we learned that there are a good number of pizza places in NYC, as pictured above. Who knew?)

Some things we like about using Bing Maps, besides the search abilities: (a) You can sign into your Microsoft account to save places and frequent points of interest, (b) the Bird’s Eye view is gorgeous and (c) Streetside is a formidable Google Maps Street View competitor. Downside: We did notice the lack of bicycle navigation.

MapQuest

quest map

MapQuest is the elder statesman of the Internet mapping world, launched way back in 1996. Nowadays, the site is packed with links to travel companies and services of that ilk, which can be handy if you’re looking for things like hotel accommodations or a car to rent. But behind it all, MapQuest is still a very capable mapping service.

You can explore in satellite or traditional map mode, view real-time traffic conditions (complete with live camera views) or pop in a destination to get detailed driving, biking, transit or walking directions. And, unlike Google Maps, sending your directions to your car’s Garmin GPS unit is fairly simple: Just download a plug-in, hook it up to your computer via USB and click the Send button in the top-right side of the map.

Waze

5 alternative

Google bought Waze to incorporate its social network service into Google Maps, which helps you navigate routes that skirt poor traffic conditions. But, by visiting the Waze desktop site, you can instead use Waze and skirt Google Maps.

The Waze desktop version is a nice-looking and simple way to get travel directions. Just punch in your current location and desired destination, and you’ll be given the quickest driving directions, based on current traffic conditions. Though, as Waze doesn’t really have much of a search function, you’ll need the addresses of all your points.

TomTom Route Planner

tomtom

The desktop navigation service from GPS maker TomTom is lightweight and basic. Just type in your points (the site does offer a limited search function), and TomTom will find you the best driving route, while factoring in live traffic delays.

Like most other mapping sites, you can link or email yourself directions. TomTom’s desktop service also lets you connect your TomTom device and send the info directly to any TomTom unit.

Apple Maps

apple map

Don’t laugh: We all remember the negative attention that the mobile launch of Apple Maps received (visit this Tumblr for lols). But that was a year and a half ago. The company has since squashed a lot of the bugs and released a version for its Mavericks operating system that we think is a nice alternative to Google Maps.

The app looks great, with 3D photo renderings of many city layouts, and also uses Yelp to search for local businesses. Once you map out directions, you can either share them by standard email or text, or also use Apple’s AirDrop to beam them to your iPhone or iPad.

For now, Maps is packaged with and only available for OS X Mavericks. It’s a solid alternative for those who are living the iLife.

Someone in Mexico Named a Child ‘Facebook’

By Molly Mulshine, BetaBeat

Baby names have been getting progressively dumber in past years (maybe because we’re now allowing Redditors to choose them). You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting four Olyvyrs and a Daxxon at the local park.

So officials in one state Mexican state have taken matters into their own hands by banning the 61 names they’ve deemed dumbest. “Facebook” is on the list — and that means at least one kid in Sonora, Mexico, is named after the social network, because the names were culled from actual civil registries.

Other questionable names that were banned: Marciana, or Martian, and Circuncision, or Circumcision, The Associated Press reports. The state has also seen names like Juan Calzon, or Juan Panties, and a little girl named Lady Di.

baby name Facebook

The law is supposed to protect kids from being bullied, Sonora Civil Registry director Cristinia Ramirez has said, but who could ever even bother an 8-year-old named Lady Di?

Juan Panties, though, has a lot to live up to. Godspeed, little dude.

Facebook has bought messaging app WhatsApp $19bn (£11.4bn)

Facebook buy whatsapp
Facebook’s previous biggest acquisition was Instagram, which it bought for $1bn in 2012

Facebook has bought messaging app WhatsApp in a deal worth a total of $19bn (£11.4bn) in cash and shares.

It is the social networking giant’s biggest acquisition to date.

WhatsApp has more than 450 million monthly users and is popular with people looking to avoid text messaging charges.

In a statement announcing the deal, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg described WhatsApp’s services as “incredibly valuable”.

WhatsApp allows users to send messages over internet connections, avoiding text messaging fees. The company claims it is currently registering one million new users a day.

It makes money by charging users a subscription fee of $1 per year, although it offers a free model as well.

Mike Butcher, techcrunch.com, explains why Facebook would want to buy WhatsApp

Silicon Valley’s newest billionaires

The deal to buy it includes $4bn in cash and approximately $12bn-worth of Facebook shares, plus an additional $3bn in stock to WhatsApp’s founders and employees at a later date.

On a conference call to discuss the deal, WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum said he planned to operate the firm “independently and autonomously”. He will also become a member of Facebook’s board of directors.

“We’re excited and honoured to partner with Mark and Facebook as we continue to bring our product to more people around the world,” Mr Koum said in a statement.

Mr Zuckerberg said the prospect of a deal was first floated just 11 days ago.

The Facebook founder said he believed WhatsApp was on track to have a billion users, but insisted he had no plans to place advertising on WhatsApp’s interface, saying he did not think ads were the best way to make money from messaging systems.

Once the deal is finalised, Mr Koum and co-founder Brian Acton are set to become Silicon Valley’s newest billionaires.

WhatsApp has about 50 employees in total.

Siphoning billions

Cathy Boyle, a senior analyst at research firm eMarketer, said WhatsApp was valuable to Facebook for several reasons beyond advertising, including its younger user base and its popularity overseas.

“WhatsApp actually has greater penetration in a lot of international markets than Facebook,” Ms Boyle told the BBC.

She added that it was notable that Facebook’s chief financial officer David Ebersman referred to the telecommunications industry when discussing the firm’s purchase.

“WhatsApp is trying to siphon the billions that the telecom industry would make from [traditional SMS text messaging]” she said.

Ben Bajarin, from California-based technology consultants Creative Strategies, told BBC Radio 4′s Today programme that the deal would allow Facebook to tap into a rapidly growing market.

“WhatsApp is on a path towards a billion users,” he said. “They’re growing exponentially – much, much faster than Facebook.

“For Facebook this is a key growth area where, even if they don’t monetise this product, this is a way that Facebook can get the next billion smartphone consumers into their ecosystem… to touch them and engage with them in other ways than just the Facebook platform.”

Shares in Facebook dropped 5% in after hours trading before recovering slightly.

Prior to this acquisition, Facebook’s biggest purchase had been Instagram for $1bn in 2012.

It had also reportedly offered $3bn to acquire photo messaging service Snapchat.
